Human Rights Day

Today is #InternationalHumanRightsDay

We want to take this time to talk about Human Rights.

Did you know that each province has their own Human Rights Commission?

The Alberta Human Rights Commission is responsible for carrying out work under the Alberta Human Rights Act, including protecting human rights.

Human rights are rights to live and work without discrimination. Laws in Canada, including the Alberta Human Rights Act, protect human rights.

The Alberta Human Rights Act protects against discrimination based on one or more protected grounds. These grounds are as follows:

– mental and physical ability

– gender, gender identity, or gender expression

– sexual orientation

– race and colour

– religious beliefs

– ancestry or place of origin

– age – marital or family status

– source of income

It is important in both Human Resources and Occupational Health and Safety to understand your provinces Human Rights Legislation, as this pertains to multiple areas including workplace violence & harassment, alcohol and drug programs, hiring practices, and firing practices.

If you haven’t familiarized yourself with these programs, or you need assistance ensuring your policies and programs meet the requirements of Human Rights Legislation, reach out to us for help!
